Minister Ambrose applauds 'Walk A Mile In Her Shoes' campaign in Cobourg

COBOURG, ON – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today congratulated Rick Norlock, MP for Northumberland Quinte West, and the other participants in the 5th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: the International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence taking place in Cobourg, Ontario.

The event, which raises funds for Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre, calls on men and boys to promote awareness and demonstrate their support for ending violence against women and girls by walking for one mile in a pair of women’s high-heeled shoes.
"I applaud the men and boys in Cobourg and the surrounding area who are participating in this important community event. They recognize that responsibility for violence against women rests with all of us and that only by working together will we solve this enduring problem," said Minister Ambrose.

"Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is an important organization in Northumberland that provides a much-needed service to families throughout the riding," said Mr. Norlock. "I support this annual event, which boldly raises awareness of the need to end family violence. I also applaud my fellow walkers for their support, encouragement and ability to shine a light on this often unseen issue."

The Government of Canada is committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Since 2007, more than $49 million in federal funding has been approved for projects that seek to address this serious issue. By working at the community level, we are improving the lives of women and girls across Canada.
