Government of Canada Funds Crime Prevention Efforts in Edmonton & Surrounding Area Programs to offer youth life skills to make smart choices

EDMONTON, August 18, 2009 – Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Spruce Grove joined the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety who announced over $5.6 million in federal support for projects aimed at preventing and reducing crime in Edmonton and surrounding area. Thomas A. Lukaszuk, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Castle Downs and Parliamentary Assistant - Municipal Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Fred Lindsay, Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security for Alberta also attended.

“The Government of Canada is committed to keeping our communities safe and preventing crime before it happens,” said Minister Van Loan. “Difficult circumstances and life events can sometimes entice at-risk youth to participate in criminal activities. The funding announced today will help offer these youth the life skills to make smart choices and avoid negative influences.”

The Government of Canada works collaboratively with various levels of government and community partners to address youth crime and enhance public safety.

“The federal government’s dedication to these projects mirrors Alberta’s own commitment to crime prevention initiatives,” said Minister Lindsay. “A solid partnership involving communities, law enforcement and all levels of government is essential in our ongoing efforts to promote strong and vibrant communities and reduce crime so Albertans feel safe.”

“I am pleased to be here today to take part in this very important announcement,” said Minister Ambrose. “These community investments will assist at-risk children and youth lead safe, healthy, and crime-free lives.”

About the National Crime Prevention Strategy:

The National Crime Prevention Strategy is administered by Public Safety Canada. The Strategy provides funding support to selected projects that help prevent crime and increase knowledge about what works in crime prevention.
