July 14, 2009
SPRUCE GROVE, ALBERTA, — On behalf of the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State for Transport, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Spruce Grove, along with Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Spruce Grove-Sturgeon-St. Albert, and Stuart Houston, Mayor of Spruce Grove, announced joint federal and provincial funding to expand the city of Spruce Grove’s arterial road network. The governments of Canada and Alberta will each invest up to $3,000,000.00 in the project. The City of Spruce Grove will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $16,631,000.00. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthen, the economy create jobs and improving the quality of life for its residents “This funding helps ease the financial pressure we face in providing essential infrastructure to the people of Spruce Grove,” said Stuart Houston, Mayor for Spruce Grove. “This will help us meet our sustainability goals by allowing traffic to move more efficiently through our city, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” "This is another example of all levels of government working together for the community. The Province is very pleased to provide the funding towards this very worthwhile project,” said Doug Horner, MLA for Spruce Grove-Sturgeon-St. Albert. “Funding under the Communities Component will support priority infrastructure projects that contribute to a growing economy, a cleaner environment, and stronger communities,” said Minister Ambrose. “This project will not only improve Spruce Grove’s infrastructure, it will create jobs and boost the economy during this period of uncertainty.” This project is one of more than 73 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $227 million announced on May 21. The governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
